What Students Should Know
Kindergarten and 1st grade
Literature – identify and describe characters, settings, and major events in a story
Informational – Describe connections between two people, events, ideas, or information in the text
2nd Grade
Literature – Start responding to events and challenges the characters are going through
Informational – Describe connections between two series of events, ideas, or steps in a procedure and add more detail
3-4th Grade
Literature – Be able to describe characters, settings, and major events in depth
Describe the relationship among a series of events ideas, and steps in a procedure and add more detail
5th Grade
Literature – Compare and contrast characters, settings, and events
Explain the relationships among people, events, ideas, or concepts in texts and cite specific information

Informational Texts
Need a variety of texts!
Differentiation: Look for texts that relate to the students’ backgrounds, histories, ancestries, situations, and heritages.
For ELL and ESOL students, books in native language or have snippets of it in the text can greatly assist in contextual information
Literature
Find books with different themes and plots
Differentiation: Add books with differing main characters (both male and female, majority and minority) to attract students of all backgrounds and ages.
Book matching – actively search for books that match the interests of your students, not just the generic populace

Kindergarten
“My Character”
Make up a character with a setting, likes and dislikes, and characteristics
Draw their characters
You can draw things from Pinterest, as long as you know the Standard
1st Grade
Character, Trait, Quote Map
Graphic Organizer to describe character with details and quotes from the text
2nd Grade
Compare and Contrast Story Map
Compare and contrast characters, setting, problem, attempt to resolve, and resolution
3rd Grade

Put the story in sequence

Identify ideas (effects) and how they affect the events (causes)
