CCSS Reading Anchor Standard 2:
Determine central ideas or themes of a texts and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
Three main Reading Skills
Ability to determine and summarize central idea or theme
Ability to analyze development of ideas or themes
Determining the Central Idea of Theme of a Text
Students must understand what message the author is trying to convey
Students’ ability to explain how key details are arranged under the main ideas may make then more likely to be able to write logical essays and thoughtful answers to a prompt.

Kindergarten
Circle Maps
Have students write words or draw pictures*** on their maps
1st Grade
Main Idea Puzzle
Model the activity
Cut out and paste the puzzle pieces onto a sheet of paper
Maybe precut the pieces for the students or laminate the pieces to use in future years!
2nd Grade
Main Idea Hat
Make a hat that has the main idea on the front under a light bulb and then three supporting details cut and pasted onto the rest of the hat
Like a worksheet, but more fun!
3rd Grade
Table Top
Groups will write the main idea on a piece of paper and then cut it out to create a “table top.” The supporting details will be written on the legs of the table.
Struggling students: write 2 of the supporting details and they write the other two and the main idea or you write all 4 and they have to come up with the main idea
Write out the main idea but leave out a word
4th Grade
Read passage on BrainPOP and then answer the questions from the video
What’s the passage’s main idea?
What words or ideas are stressed?
Where in the passage is the main idea stated?
5th Grade
Detailed Paragraph
Read a desk and then write a two to three paragraph essay about the main idea with the supporting details
Discuss vocab words before writing with informational texts
Differentiating for ELLs
Passage can be translated into L1
Draw pictures instead of write sentences
Express thoughts and ideas through oral language in groups
