  11. Students must understand what message the author is trying to convey

  12. Students’ ability to explain how key details are arranged under the main ideas may make then more likely to be able to write logical essays and thoughtful answers to a prompt.

  57. Cut out and paste the puzzle pieces onto a sheet of paper

  58. Maybe precut the pieces for the students or laminate the pieces to use in future years!

  59. 2nd Grade

  60. Main Idea Hat

  61. Make a hat that has the main idea on the front under a light bulb and then three supporting details cut and pasted onto the rest of the hat

  62. Like a worksheet, but more fun!

  63. 3rd Grade

  64. Table Top

  65. Groups will write the main idea on a piece of paper and then cut it out to create a “table top.” The supporting details will be written on the legs of the table.

  66. Struggling students: write 2 of the supporting details and they write the other two and the main idea or you write all 4 and they have to come up with the main idea

  67. Write out the main idea but leave out a word

  68. 4th Grade

  69. Read passage on BrainPOP and then answer the questions from the video

  70. What’s the passage’s main idea?

  75. Read a desk and then write a two to three paragraph essay about the main idea with the supporting details

  76. Discuss vocab words before writing with informational texts

  78. Passage can be translated into L1

  79. Draw pictures instead of write sentences

  80. Express thoughts and ideas through oral language in groups

  81. Visual guide or model
